Babra Batini shared the harrowing experience her family faced when floodwaters inundated their home, forcing them to quickly gather essential food items and seek refuge. The 18-year-old recounted how her family, among 13 others, navigated through the rising waters in Nawaka, Nadi, on Christmas Day, making their way to Andrews Primary School, which is currently serving as a shelter.
Upon their arrival in the morning, Batini noted that they had to wait for the headteacher to open the school, spending up to three hours at the bus stop. Accompanied by several family members, including her father, brothers, and pregnant sister-in-law, they faced the distressing situation together.
At the time they left their house, the floodwaters had risen to her waist. Batini expressed sorrow over the damage caused to their belongings, including their oven, fridge, and various electronic devices. Fortunately, police assistance enabled them to salvage some items using their vehicle.
This story highlights the resilience and unity of families in times of crisis, showing how communities come together in the face of adversity. Such instances remind us of the importance of support and solidarity during difficult times.
