Two cattle farmers in Labasa are suffering significant emotional and financial hardship due to the theft and brutal killing of their livestock, leading to combined losses nearing $10,000. Arif Hussein, of Valebasoga, reported losing three bulls between November and December last year. The first incident occurred on November 29, followed by further thefts on December 20 and 27. Unfortunately, after informing the Labasa Police Station about these incidents, he was devastated to later discover the remains of two of his bulls near his farm, a sight that left him in tears.

Hussein expressed his anguish, stating, “Seeing the skin and intestines was heartbreaking; these bulls were not just livestock but part of my family’s livelihood.” He has incurred losses exceeding $6,000 and is worried about how these events hamper his family’s financial stability, especially with children who are set to return to school.

Similarly, fellow farmer Mahaboob Ali from Soasoa reported that a bull valued at $3,000 went missing on December 9. Weeks later, his son discovered the bull’s skin strewn across the mountains, which further emphasized the cruelty involved in these thefts. At the age of 75, Ali, who has been farming for more than two decades, called for respect within the community, saying, “No religion encourages human beings to steal and kill.”

The ongoing investigations into these thefts have been confirmed by Acting Divisional Police Commander for the North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo. He assured the community that police are actively investigating these reports, underscoring the alarming trend of livestock thefts in the region, which poses a substantial threat to farmers reliant on their cattle for income.
