Two cattle farmers from Labasa, Fiji, are facing heartbreak after experiencing multiple thefts that have resulted in significant financial losses totaling nearly $10,000. Arif Hussein, a farmer from Valebasoga, reported the loss of three bulls over two months, with thefts occurring on November 29, December 20, and December 27. Despite his prompt reporting of the incidents to Labasa Police, the situation escalated when he discovered the remains of two of his bulls near his farm weeks later, a tragic event that left him devastated.

“My wife and children sacrifice a lot of time looking after the livestock, as it’s our only source of income,” Hussein shared, reflecting on the emotional and financial toll the theft has taken on his family. The farmer hopes the perpetrator is apprehended soon, noting that sleepless nights have become routine as they vigilantly watch over their remaining cattle.

Similarly, Mahaboob Ali, another farmer from Soasoa, reported that his bull, valued at $3,000, went missing on December 9. After weeks of searching, he found his bull’s skin scattered in the mountains near Vulovi. “No religion encourages human beings to steal and kill; hence, we should respect each other,” Ali remarked, underscoring the moral implications of livestock theft.

Acting Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed that both farmers’ reports have been received and investigations are ongoing, stressing the need for community vigilance.

This troubling trend of livestock theft in Labasa highlights not only the challenges farmers face but also the necessity for collective community action to ensure safety and security. As the Fiji Police intensify efforts to address these crimes, farmers and residents are reminded of the importance of looking out for one another during these difficult times.

In a broader context, the desire for justice and community solidarity expressed by the farmers fosters hope that collaborative efforts can lead to improved safety measures, helping to restore a sense of security for vulnerable communities.
