Two cattle farmers in Labasa, Fiji, are reeling from significant financial losses due to the theft and brutal slaughter of their livestock, amounting to nearly $10,000. Arif Hussein, a farmer from Valebasoga, reported losing three bulls over the span of two months, with thefts occurring on November 29, December 20, and December 27. Despite Hussein filing police reports at the Labasa Police Station, his heartbreak deepened when he later discovered the remains of two of his bulls nearby.

“I wept when I saw the remains; these bulls are not just livestock, they are part of our family’s livelihood,” shared Hussein, who faces additional worry regarding his children’s educational needs. He estimates his losses to be over $6,000, leading to sleepless nights as he and his family vigilantly watch over their remaining cattle.

Another farmer, Mahaboob Ali, also suffered from the rising tide of livestock theft when his bull, valued at approximately $3,000, went missing on December 9. Weeks later, he found its skin discarded in a nearby mountain, highlighting the growing concern over livestock safety in the area.

Ali, a seasoned cattle farmer of over 20 years, voiced his frustration, stating, “No religion promotes theft and cruelty; we must stand together and show respect for one another.”

The Acting Divisional Police Commander for North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed that the Labasa Police are actively investigating these incidents, stressing the importance of community cooperation in addressing criminal activities. This type of livestock theft has become a worrying trend, particularly during times of adverse weather when thefts seem to surge, as noted by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu.

The police are ramping up community engagement efforts, encouraging locals to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. This collective effort not only aims to protect local farmers but fosters community solidarity and resilience in the face of adversity.
