Two cattle farmers from Labasa are coping with significant emotional and financial distress following a series of brutal livestock thefts that have resulted in close to $10,000 in losses. Arif Hussein, a farmer from Valebasoga, tragically reported losing three bulls over a two-month period, with the first theft occurring on November 29 and the subsequent losses on December 20 and 27. Despite promptly reporting the incidents to the Labasa Police, his heartbreak deepened when he later discovered the remains of two bulls near his farm weeks later.
Hussein expressed his anguish, stating, “Seeing the skin and intestines was heartbreaking; these bulls were not just livestock but part of my family’s livelihood.” He estimates his losses to exceed $6,000, causing added stress for his family, particularly concerning the education of his children. “We can’t afford to let someone affect our business,” he lamented, reflecting the emotional toll and the pressing need for financial stability.
Similarly, Mahaboob Ali, another farmer from Soasoa, reported that a bull valued at $3,000 was stolen on December 9. His subsequent search culminated in discovering only the skin of his bull discarded in the nearby mountains weeks later. Ali, a dedicated farmer for over two decades, emphasized the moral obligation to respect livestock, stating, “No religion encourages human beings to steal and kill; we should respect each other.”
The Acting Divisional Police Commander for the North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed that investigations are ongoing into both farmers’ reports. This troubling trend of theft poses a serious threat to local farmers, many of whom rely heavily on their livestock for income. The Fiji Police Force has ramped up community policing efforts in response to the rising incidences of livestock theft, particularly during vulnerable periods such as adverse weather conditions or economic hardship.
The situation highlights a broader issue concerning the challenges faced by farmers in Labasa, amplifying the need for community solidarity and cooperation in safeguarding their resources. As farmers navigate these difficult times, there is hope for improvement through increased vigilance and collaboration between residents and law enforcement, fostering a safer environment for agriculture. The resilience displayed by the farmers and the support from the community could play a crucial role in combating these challenges, emphasizing the strength found in unity during times of hardship.
