The Catholic Church is making significant strides in addressing Fiji’s growing drug challenge by adopting a grassroots approach aimed at reaching young people most at risk. Archbishop Peter Loy Chong announced that a series of innovative initiatives are set to launch, designed to empower youth leaders and heighten awareness throughout the community.

The first major workshop is scheduled for April 19, targeting Catholic youth in the Central and Eastern divisions. “We’re training leaders who will then take the message back to their parish and village,” Archbishop Chong stated, emphasizing the importance of local outreach.

Funding for this initiative will come from voluntary contributions at parishes and potential sponsorships. The Church is eager to foster interfaith collaboration in this endeavor. “We hope to invite other churches and faiths. We will extend an invitation to them,” he remarked, showcasing the Church’s commitment to building a united front in the fight against drug abuse.

Previous workshops, such as one held at Studio 6 in Suva, focused solely on Christian participants. However, Archbishop Chong aims to expand these efforts through the Fiji Council of Churches, underlining the need to connect with young people in relevant and accessible ways. He highlighted the significance of leveraging social media, referencing a youth-led video initiative on Facebook as an effective tool for outreach.

In addition to workshops, a music festival is planned for August. This event aims to educate school students about the dangers of drugs in a fun and engaging manner. Archbishop Chong stressed that effectively tackling Fiji’s drug crisis requires more than just legislation; it necessitates creativity, community involvement, and unity driven by faith.

This proactive stance from the Catholic Church reflects a hopeful outlook towards combating drug abuse in Fiji, demonstrating a commitment to youth empowerment and community solidarity.
