Team Flame Tree, under the leadership of Captain Peter Levastam, is poised as the frontrunner for the Flame Tree-sponsored Fiji Classic Game Fishing 2024 event, which is set to commence this weekend. This inaugural tournament is organized by the Denarau Game and Sports Fishing Club, celebrating a new chapter in the local fishing community.
A mix of skillful anglers is participating, including notable names like Jared Wood from Ice T, Thakor Punja representing Lunasea, Darren Smith from Hoodlum, Alex Leigh, and the evergreen Marc McElrath. The female competitor spotlight is on Cristina Valente from Sidestep.
Coordinator Glenn Wakeman mentioned the event’s appeal has drawn both local and international anglers. The winning team will be rewarded with an invitation to compete in the Offshore World Championship in Costa Rica in 2025, alongside a cash prize of $10,000. The tournament is hosted at the new Clubhouse at Port Denarau Marina, adjacent to Sails Restaurant, and is packed with exciting prizes across various categories, including species categories, angler awards, and boat prizes.
Additional major prizes include a tournament trophy for the Champion Team, $10,000, as well as consolation prizes for the Big Boat Team, Champion Male, Female, and Junior Anglers, plus a special Last Man Standing prize.
In the current season’s team rankings, Team Flame Tree is in the lead with 2313.7 points, followed closely by Ice T with 2278.4 points, and Hoodlum with 1715.5 points. The top individual anglers include Jared Wood with 1771.8 points, Peter Levastam with 1500 points, and Thakor Punja with 1000 points.
This tournament not only fosters healthy competition among passionate anglers but also enhances community spirit and promotes the beautiful sport of game fishing in Fiji.
