In a significant move towards enhancing rural development and combating poverty, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed the commitment of the People’s Coalition government to promote inclusive growth in Fiji through the ambitious Vanua Levu Road upgrade initiative. Recently, he completed a two-day visit to the Northern Division to evaluate the progress of these road upgrades, which are financed by China’s Belt and Road Initiative through a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA).
During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka inspected various stretches, including the 15km Nabouwalu Road in Bua extending to Nasolo, and the 35km section from Nabalebale to Dogoru along the Wailevu West Coast Road. He emphasized that while these upgrades improve connectivity, their real significance lies in empowering rural communities by facilitating economic opportunities. He urged residents to see roads not just as channels for communication but as means to access local growth and prosperity.
With a total investment of $300 million dedicated to this infrastructure enhancement, the project aims to open doors for rural communities, boosting sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy. Prime Minister Rabuka highlighted the need for local empowerment, echoing the government’s Targeted Poverty Alleviation Programme, which seeks to eradicate poverty at the grassroots level.
In a personal reflection during his tour, he recounted memories tied to the local area, enhancing his advocacy for developmental efforts in these communities. He expressed optimism that through better infrastructure, rural residents can enjoy improved wellness and economic prospects without the necessity of migrating to urban centers.
The visit also addressed the longstanding issue of the Mount Kasi mining conflict where two competing miners await license approvals, with the Prime Minister expressing hope for a resolution soon. His discussions with senior civil servants in Savusavu emphasized the importance of proactive governance in addressing public service deficiencies to facilitate meaningful changes.
Concluding his visit, Mr. Rabuka reinforced his belief that the Vanua Levu road upgrade is not merely a regional project but a vital component of Fiji’s national development strategy, aiming for a prosperous, connected, and resilient nation. His optimism instills hope that these significant changes will lead to enhanced livelihoods and an equitable future for all Fijians.
This initiative showcases a collaborative effort towards sustainable rural transformation, highlighting the potential for infrastructural development to act as a vehicle for broader economic growth. It paints a hopeful picture for Fiji’s future, where rural areas can thrive and contribute equally to the nation’s prosperity.
