The upcoming 2025 Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival will take place from July 18 to 26 at Subrail Park in Labasa, focusing this year on raising awareness about drug-related issues. The carnival committee chairperson, Satish Kumar, emphasized the goal of helping individuals understand the importance of saying no to drugs.

Mr. Kumar explained that many contestants will participate in various competition categories, including queens, kings, teens, and princesses, all of whom will advocate against drug use throughout the event. He noted that the message about the dangers of drugs is not just the responsibility of law enforcement agencies but a collective issue that involves the community.

Since its inception in 2012, the carnival has collaborated with the Fiji Police Force to raise public awareness regarding crime and related societal problems. Mr. Kumar mentioned ongoing discussions for potential community projects aimed at supporting efforts to curb drug issues effectively.

In addition to its awareness initiatives, the carnival will maintain its traditional setup, allowing attendees to enjoy the entertainment, taste local foods from various stalls, and cheer for their favorite contestants without the hassle of needing to move from place to place.

This year’s focus on drug awareness follows a growing concern within communities about drug abuse, particularly highlighted by growing statistics and testimonies from healthcare professionals regarding increasing admissions for rehabilitation.

The carnival serves as a hopeful platform not only for enjoyment and celebration but also for significant community engagement aimed at fostering resilience against drug-related issues. It reflects a joint effort to ensure a safer future for all, stressing that collective action can lead to positive change.
