Carnival Spirit Shines Through Rain and Mud: A 1990 Celebration

The Hibiscus Carnival of 1990 stands out as a remarkable demonstration of community spirit and resilience during challenging times. An article from The Fiji Times dated August 27, 1990, highlighted that although the event faced incessant rain and muddy conditions, it still managed to reflect an uplifting display of unity and enthusiasm.

The carnival featured a float procession along Rodwell Rd and Victoria Pde, culminating at Albert Park, and was a key highlight of the week’s celebrations. Despite the difficult weather, which transformed the venue into muddy terrain and small lakes, the turnout was exceptional. Tens of thousands of attendees braved the adverse conditions, lining the streets four deep to enjoy the procession, armed with umbrellas and raincoats, showcasing their unwavering affection for the carnival and its traditions.

Earlier events throughout the week, including the Military Tattoo and Fijian Night, had also been adversely affected by the heavy rain. Yet, even while soaked through, festival-goers exhibited remarkable generosity and patience, sharing shelters and umbrellas, while keeping their spirits high amid the large crowd.

The logistics were complex, with police managing both traffic and crowds in less-than-ideal circumstances due to the mud. However, carnival attendees remained undaunted, returning to the sodden grounds of Albert Park in various types of footwear, from gumboots to high heels, and embracing the experience with humor.

The carnival concluded on Saturday with a final wave of visitors eager to view the floats and meet the newly crowned Hibiscus Queen, Litia Dewa, who symbolized the event’s success and the collective efforts of the community.

As the festivities came to a close and the carnival lights dimmed, the spirit of the Hibiscus Carnival remained a powerful testament to the unity and resilience of the community, highlighting the deep connection between the event and its supporters that overcame the trials of inclement weather.
