The 2025 Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival is set to take place from July 18 to 26 at Subrail Park in Labasa, with a strong focus on raising awareness about drug-related issues. Chairperson Satish Kumar emphasized that the event aims to help individuals understand the critical importance of saying no to drugs.
A highlight of the carnival will be the participation of contestants across various categories, including queens, kings, teens, and princesses, who will serve as advocates against drug use throughout the festivities. Kumar pointed out that raising awareness about the dangers of drugs is not solely the duty of law enforcement but requires a communal effort.
Since it began in 2012, the carnival has partnered with the Fiji Police Force to address crime and related societal challenges. Kumar shared that discussions are ongoing to develop community projects designed to support efforts in combating drug issues effectively.
In addition to awareness campaigns, the carnival will continue its traditional format, providing attendees with entertainment, local food options from various stalls, and opportunities to cheer for their favorite contestants—all without the inconvenience of moving around.
This year’s emphasis on drug awareness comes in response to rising concerns in the community regarding drug abuse, illustrated by increasing statistics and testimonies from healthcare professionals about rising rehabilitation admissions.
Overall, the carnival represents a hopeful platform not only for celebration but also for meaningful community engagement focused on fostering resilience against drug-related challenges. By advocating for collective action, the event aims to contribute to a safer and more supportive future for all participants.
