An independent investigation into harassment allegations from the crowning night of the 2024 Hibiscus Carnival has been completed and submitted to the Ministry of Local Government for review.

Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa announced that the investigation involved interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, following the policies of the Suva City Council.

Mr. Nalumisa explained that the investigation was conducted by an independent panel, which included the chair of the Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external specialist in event management and public safety, as well as a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy group.

He emphasized the commitment to ensuring the investigation was conducted in an impartial, transparent, and professional manner, adhering to all legal and regulatory standards.

Additionally, he noted that a separate police investigation into the matter is currently underway.

“The ministry will cooperate fully with law enforcement as the process continues,” Mr. Nalumisa stated.
