Car Rental Scam: Man Charged for Deceptive Financial Gain in Fiji

A 52-year-old man has been apprehended by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce Team for allegedly committing fraud to gain financial advantage. The incident, which took place on September 8, 2023, involved the accused dishonestly obtaining a sum of $100 from the victim via the M-Paisa platform.

According to police investigations, the victim was browsing Facebook when he encountered an advertisement related to car rentals, which prompted him to transfer a deposit to secure a vehicle. However, after the transaction, the victim faced difficulties in reaching the driver by phone, raising suspicions about the legitimacy of the offer.

Following this incident, the victim reported the matter to the Consumer Council, which subsequently referred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force in Suva. The accused is set to appear in court at the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance while conducting transactions online, especially on social media platforms.
