A 52-year-old man has been charged by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce Team for allegedly committing fraud to secure financial gain. The incident, which is said to have occurred on September 8, 2023, involved the defendant deceitfully obtaining $100 from a victim through the M-Paisa mobile money service.

According to police reports, the victim discovered a car rental advertisement while browsing Facebook. Following the post’s instructions, the victim paid a deposit to reserve the vehicle. Unfortunately, attempts to reach the driver for confirmation were unsuccessful, prompting the victim to report the incident.

The Consumer Council received the complaint and subsequently referred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force in Suva. The accused individual is scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.

This incident highlights the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions, especially on social media platforms. As digital scams become increasingly prevalent, it’s crucial for individuals to verify the legitimacy of offers and to seek assistance if something feels amiss.

In light of this, there is hope that as community awareness grows about such scams, more individuals will be empowered to protect themselves and report fraudulent activities, aiding law enforcement in their efforts to tackle such crimes effectively.
