The deteriorating condition of buildings in certain areas of the Capital City has led to a critical review of existing regulations, with the aim of potentially updating them. Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa expressed concern over the aging and poorly maintained structures that have become unsightly, emphasizing the immediate need for improvements while adhering to legal frameworks.

In response to inquiries about whether the ministry intends to motivate other property owners to enhance their buildings, particularly following the renovation of the Yatu Lau Arcade, Nalumisa revealed that this matter is under consideration. He noted the noticeable presence of dilapidated buildings when entering the city, describing them as an eyesore.

The Minister highlighted the necessity for the Government to assess whether current laws permit necessary interventions, stressing that any remedial actions must comply with legal stipulations. He also pointed out that the issue extends to property owners residing overseas who have neglected the upkeep of their properties.

Nalumisa has directed the municipal council to examine the situation and evaluate feasible solutions for addressing the longstanding issue of buildings in poor condition. “We need to first find out how best to do something about it,” he stated, adding, “If it is within the law, then we need to come up with something.” The Minister’s proactive approach indicates an optimistic outlook on improving the city’s aesthetic and structural integrity while ensuring lawful processes are followed.
