A recent Cantonese opera performance in Hong Kong has taken a humorous jab at global politics, featuring a portrayal of U.S. President Donald Trump. The show, titled “Trump, The Twins President,” depicts an exaggerated, comedic narrative where Trump, played by an actor in a blond wig, engages in humorous confrontations with a character impersonating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The performance took place at the Xiqu Theatre and has become a popular attraction since its debut in 2019.

Written by Edward Li, a former Feng Shui master turned playwright, the production explores contemporary political themes through the lens of traditional Cantonese opera, a genre known for its blend of singing, acting, martial arts, and vibrant costumes. The latest iteration of the show presents absurd scenarios, including a playful kidnapping by aliens, and Trump and Zelenskiy quarreling over fashion in the White House—complete with water guns sourced from online shopping site Taobao.

The audience response was enthusiastic, filled with laughter and applause, particularly among younger attendees who find the fusion of classic art forms with modern humor refreshing. Actor Lung Koon-tin, who portrays Trump, expressed the unique nature of the current U.S. president and emphasized the importance of friendship between China and the U.S.

This theatrical piece not only entertains but serves as a critical commentary on the impact of Trump’s policies, particularly how his tariffs and decisions have resonated across the globe. The production highlights the artistic community’s role in engaging with significant political and social matters, showcasing that satire can be a potent tool for fostering dialogue and reflection.

This blend of tradition with contemporary relevance illustrates how art can bridge cultural gaps, making it an engaging and valuable experience for audiences who might feel detached from conventional forms of expression. As the world continues to navigate complex political realities, performances like this offer a hopeful reminder of the power of creativity to unite and provoke thought.
