Cannes Fashion Rules: A Shift in Glamour with Berry’s Bold Change

Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry recently revealed that she had to change her planned outfit at the Cannes Film Festival due to newly implemented dress code rules. Speaking to reporters, Berry mentioned that the updated guidelines prohibit nudity and prohibit “voluminous outfits,” particularly those featuring oversized trains that might obstruct other guests or complicate seating arrangements.

As a jury member at this year’s festival, Berry expressed disappointment over having to abandon a stunning dress designed by Gupta because its train was too long. However, she also acknowledged the reasoning behind the prohibition on nudity, stating, “I do think it’s probably also a good rule.”

Cannes organizers emphasized that attendees who do not adhere to the dress code could be denied access to the red carpet. The festival has seen a trend in recent years of celebrities testing the limits of dress codes with extravagant trains and sheer designs, such as Kanye West’s wife Bianca Censori’s eye-catching look at the Grammy Awards earlier this year.

Additionally, the updated code includes a provision allowing elegant shoes without heels, a change praised by jury president Juliette Binoche. Binoche shared her thoughts on the alterations to the dress code, deeming them a “very good idea” based on her experiences.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival is set against a backdrop of significant industry discussions, particularly in light of controversies affecting Hollywood, such as potential tariffs on foreign films. Despite these challenges, the festival aims to remain a platform for creative expression and celebrates the resilience of filmmakers.

Overall, the changes to the dress code reflect ongoing efforts to create a more welcoming and comfortable environment on the red carpet—a space renowned for its glamour and spectacle.
