Waisea Salele, a former police officer with nearly two decades of experience in global conflict zones, has returned to Fiji to enhance community safety in Pacific Harbour. He recently launched K9 Security Services, a private unit specializing in canine-based security measures aimed at crime prevention, police support, and restoring a sense of safety among residents.

Salele’s initiative includes night patrols, tracking intruders, and aiding in drug detection. His career began in 2000 with the Fiji Police Canine Unit at Nadi Airport, focusing on critical areas like drug detection and major crimes. After his resignation in 2007, he gained international experience in military zones before returning to Fiji during the COVID-19 pandemic to contribute to local safety efforts.

Describing his mission, Salele ensured that his presence not only serves as a deterrent to crime but also provides reassurance to residents. “Every night they can’t sleep well… Since the first month that I started, the result is that they can feel secure and sleep well all the time,” he said. His team actively patrols over 30 homes, creating a close-knit community security network, particularly in areas like VC Circle and Yasi Circle.

In addition to patrolling, Salele also trains local dog handlers and encourages residents to participate in enhancing local security by training their own dogs for safety purposes. This proactive approach mirrors the ongoing efforts within Fiji to strengthen local law enforcement capabilities. The growing trend of community involvement in policing concerns and the collaboration between residents and security services can contribute positively to the overall safety landscape in the region.

Such local initiatives symbolize a hopeful future for community safety, showcasing how former law enforcement professionals like Salele are stepping forward to make a difference after years of service. His return highlights the potential for restoring community trust and engagement in security measures, ultimately leading to safer neighborhoods for all residents.

The efforts of individuals like Salele not only bolster local security but also inspire a collective commitment to creating safer living environments, proving that community collaboration can lead to meaningful and lasting change.
