The Sugar Industry Tribunal has announced a payment of $12.22 per tonne for sugar cane, which will be disbursed to farmers on Friday. This will mark the third cane payment for the 2024 season, bringing the cumulative total to $69.63 per tonne. Previously, farmers received $43.06 per tonne for their delivery payment, alongside a second payment of $14.35 per tonne.
As of March 28, the net proceeds shared among sugarcane growers amount to $133,937,226. This financial boost is part of ongoing efforts to support the sugarcane farming community, especially following challenges faced during recent agricultural seasons.
This year’s payments are crucial for farmers as they navigate the impacts of climate change and fluctuating market conditions, reflecting a broader trend of governmental support to ensure the viability and resilience of the sugarcane industry. Similar initiatives announced recently in Fiji indicate a commitment to uplifting the farming sector, highlighting the importance of sustained efforts to address both immediate financial needs and long-term agricultural sustainability.
The overall picture is one of cautious optimism as farmers receive much-needed support, which can help them invest in their futures and maintain the momentum of the sugarcane industry in the region.
