The sugar industry is grappling with significant challenges stemming from climate pressures and rising costs, leading to a call for unity among cane growers. Vimal Dutt, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sugar Cane Growers Council, emphasized that 2025 is shaping up to be particularly tough due to unpredictable weather conditions, escalating input costs, and persistent issues related to harvesting, milling, and labor.
Despite these challenges, Dutt highlighted the resilience and commitment of growers, which has been crucial in maintaining stability within the industry during these trying times. He underscored the Council’s primary objective this year: to enhance support for growers, ensure better retention, and promote long-term resilience within farming communities.
In his remarks, Dutt pointed to the Cane Grower newsletter as an essential resource for keeping farmers informed through consistent updates in both English and local languages. He also stressed the importance of climate risk management, noting that parametric insurance is now available for the cyclone season at subsidized rates. Additionally, he mentioned that micro bundled insurance has been instrumental in providing financial relief to families impacted by losses.
Dutt urged growers to remain actively engaged with the Council and take advantage of the services offered through district offices. He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to advocating for growers as the industry looks forward to the new year, fostering a sense of hope and cooperation among cane growers. This collective effort is vital as the industry navigates current adversities and strives for a more sustainable future.
