The Sugar Cane Growers Council has expressed appreciation for the timely announcement of the fourth cane payment for farmers ahead of the new crushing season, with the payment set at $17.03 per tonne. This payment, confirmed by the Sugar Industry Tribunal, brings significant relief to cane growers, particularly in the western and northern divisions of Fiji.
CEO Vimal Dutt conveyed the importance of this final payment, which raises the total earnings of farmers to $86.66 per tonne for the 2024 crushing season. He mentioned, “It was a long-awaited cane payment,” noting that many farmers anticipated receipt later in the month, but the early disbursement is a welcome surprise. Dutt emphasized that this financial support should help ease the burdens as farmers prepare for the upcoming season.
As of April 30, 2025, the net proceeds shared among sugarcane growers stand at $115,427,843. To date, the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has distributed a total of $69.63 per tonne, which includes $43.06 for delivery payment, $14.35 for the second installment, and $12.22 for the third cane payment.
This ongoing support from the FSC is part of a broader initiative to assist sugarcane farmers during a challenging period characterized by adverse weather and market volatility. It aligns with recent efforts to bolster the agricultural sector’s resilience, as highlighted previously when the third payment was confirmed. It reflects a pattern of governmental support aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of farmers and ensuring the sustainability of the sugar industry amid evolving economic pressures.
In light of the countless pressures faced by growers, this latest support can foster a sense of hope and optimism, encouraging farmers to invest in their operations and look forward to a more stable future in this vital industry.
