SODELPA’s general secretary, Viliame Takayawa, has made a formal submission to the Electoral Reform Commission advocating for drug testing for potential election candidates. This measure aims to bolster public trust in the integrity of the electoral process.

Takayawa emphasized the necessity for a credible electoral system where candidates adhere to high standards of personal conduct and accountability. “A credible electoral system requires clear, fair standards for who can vote and stand for election,” Mr. Takayawa stated.

The proposal was brought to light more prominently after the commission released a series of questions designed to enhance public engagement on electoral reforms. During a recent public consultation in Suva, attendee Martha Fatiaki highlighted the pressing impact of drug issues in Fiji, suggesting that drug testing for candidates should be mandatory.

Fatiaki expressed concern over the declining caliber of leadership in Fiji and noted pivotal historical figures in the country’s political landscape. She urged for a critical examination of the quality of candidates representing constituents in parliament, stating, “We should go higher than that,” referencing the standards set by influential leaders like Ratu Sukuna and Ratu Mara.

Similar ongoing efforts to address drug-related issues in Fiji include new protocols instated by the Fiji Police Force and the Ministry of Sports advocating for drug testing in athletics. The initiatives led by Minister Jese Saukuru and the upcoming establishment of local drug testing capabilities illustrate a unified commitment across different sectors to tackle drug-related challenges effectively.

This collective advocacy for drug testing highlights an aspirational push towards higher standards of accountability, not only in politics but across various spheres in Fiji. The commitment to fostering a drug-free environment signifies a hopeful future where integrity and public trust in leadership are prioritized, creating a more accountable community for all citizens.
