Canada is poised to significantly bolster its trade and investment relationship with Fiji, leveraging enhanced connectivity and a robust diplomatic framework. Randeep Sarai, Canada’s Secretary of State for International Development, highlighted that the advent of direct flights between the two nations, along with the opening of a Canadian High Commission in Suva, marks a pivotal moment for deeper economic collaboration.

Sarai emphasized the vital role that the High Commission will play in aiding businesses, providing essential resources and coordination to facilitate smoother operations for investors in Fiji. “Having a High Commission here gives businesses the support they need, and I think the opportunities between the two nations are limitless,” he remarked.

The Secretary of State noted the strong interpersonal connections between Canadians and Fijians, especially within the Fijian-Canadian community. He pointed out an increasing interest from Canadian firms eager to expand their presence in Fiji. “Everybody wants to open more ties. Some are already doing work in Fiji, while others want to invest more. At the same time, there are real opportunities for Fiji to export into Canada. Our goal is mutual prosperity, so that growth benefits both Canada and Fiji,” Sarai stated.

Looking ahead, Sarai mentioned that collaboration with the Canada Fiji Business Council, coupled with enhanced engagement from the new High Commissioner, is expected to further stimulate investment and commercial activities between the two countries, signaling a promising future for both economies. The commitment from Canada to deepen its relationship with Fiji is not only a strategic move but also a hopeful step towards shared growth and prosperity for both nations.
