Randeep Sarai, the Canadian Secretary of State for International Development, is set to arrive in Fiji today as part of his official visit, which includes the opening of the new Canadian High Commission in Suva on Friday. This significant diplomatic establishment will be located at 47 Gladstone Road.

During his visit, Mr. Sarai is anticipated to engage with business leaders in Nadi at a networking event hosted by Investment Fiji. This gathering is seen as a vital opportunity to enhance discussions about Canada’s foreign policy priorities, including diversifying trade and investments while strengthening economic growth partnerships through international collaboration.

Investment Fiji noted that Secretary of State Sarai’s visit signifies an important milestone in Canada’s longstanding engagement with the region. The event will focus on Canada’s intentions to foster economic development, tourism, and climate change resilience while enhancing people-to-people ties between Canada and Fiji.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Fiji has collaborated closely with Canadian officials in establishing this new high commission and implementing Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, which aims to deepen diplomatic relations with one of the world’s largest economies. This strategy will also support Fiji by creating its first international assistance program tailored specifically for the Pacific Islands region.

Canada has already been involved in various development initiatives in Fiji, including notable projects such as The Kiwa Initiative, which promotes nature-based solutions for climate resilience, and other programs aimed at improving market access and supporting small-scale fisheries. Since 2012, 39 local initiatives funded by Canada have been successfully supported in Fiji, illustrating a commitment to sustainable development in the area.

The establishment of a resident High Commission in Fiji is expected to not only bolster bilateral ties but also enhance cooperation regarding trade, tourism, and broader economic partnerships in the Pacific Islands, paving the way for a stronger relationship between the two nations.
