Many Fijians residing in various parts of the Pacific are advocating for more affordable airfares and expanded regional flight options from Fiji Airways, the national airline. These calls have been echoed by Fiji’s High Commissioner to New Zealand and Special Envoy to the Pacific, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, who highlighted these concerns among the Fijian diaspora, including approximately 3,000 Fijians living in the Cook Islands.
Although travel has become marginally easier with the elimination of transit visa requirements through New Zealand, Ratu Inoke believes there is significant room for improvement in facilitating smoother regional travel. He notes that while there is a need for Fiji Airways to maintain profitability, partnering with other carriers or stakeholders could yield more cost-effective regional connections. Efforts are ongoing to obtain a response from Fiji Airways regarding these concerns.
Fiji Airways plays a crucial role as a regional connector, especially for Pacific nations like Tuvalu and Kiribati, which lack direct international flights.
