Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to play a crucial role in addressing the drug crisis in Fiji, according to Mohammed Nafeez, an IT professional based in Lautoka. He stresses that with the increasing smuggling of drugs, there is a pressing need for innovative and forward-thinking solutions.
Traditional methods, while valuable, have not been effective in tackling the complex nature of drug issues, Mr. Nafeez argues. He suggests that AI could be utilized to create predictive models that identify at-risk areas and populations, thereby informing awareness campaigns and how resources are allocated.
Furthermore, AI technology can improve virtual counseling and mental health applications, offering personalized and accessible care for those in recovery. These tools could track a patient’s progress and initiate timely interventions to minimize the risk of relapse. In addition, AI-driven surveillance and data analytics could disrupt drug supply chains more effectively.
Mr. Nafeez emphasizes the importance of community involvement in combating drug-related challenges. He believes that under governmental guidance, AI can facilitate educational initiatives that empower families and communities to recognize and address drug issues. Furthermore, building trust between law enforcement and the community is vital, and AI-assisted strategies can emphasize rehabilitation alongside justice.
While acknowledging that AI is not a comprehensive solution to the drug crisis, Mr. Nafeez views it as a powerful ally. With responsible and inclusive use of AI technologies, there is hope that Fiji can make significant strides in the fight against drugs.
This perspective not only highlights the potential of technology in social issues but also points towards a collaborative approach involving communities, law enforcement, and technology to foster lasting change in the response to drug-related challenges.
