A cabinet minister has urged temple committees to prioritize the installation of security cameras over spending on alcoholic beverages. Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, made this call following a recent incident of vandalism at a Hindu temple in the Western Division, where sacred idols were damaged.

Singh emphasized that the lack of surveillance in most temples poses a significant risk, stating, “This should be one of their priorities.” He noted that by investing in security equipment such as cameras, temple committees could effectively monitor and identify individuals who commit acts of vandalism.

The minister also pointed out a concerning trend among temple-goers, remarking that while many spend only about half an hour in prayer, they often choose to spend the following five hours consuming grog. He argued that the money allocated for these social gatherings could be better utilized to enhance the security of temples.

This statement reflects a growing concern about protecting sacred spaces within the community and highlights the importance of developing a proactive approach to security. In light of increasing incidents of vandalism, advocating for better security measures could foster a safer environment for worshippers and preserve the sanctity of places of worship.
