Opposition Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has urged Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to take decisive measures against Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga, citing concerns over Turaga’s ability to correctly interpret legal matters. Usamate expressed that Turaga’s perceived legal weaknesses are casting a shadow over both the Prime Minister and the government’s overall effectiveness.
According to Usamate, Turaga’s actions have raised serious doubts about the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law. He pointed out that the law referenced by Turaga does not actually empower him to suspend Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa amid allegations of misconduct. Furthermore, Usamate highlighted an alarming inconsistency in the treatment of personnel involved in serious allegations, noting that while Dr. Nakarawa has been placed on leave, another individual, Barbara Malimali, who is under investigation for alleged offenses, has not faced similar repercussions.
These discrepancies, Usamate argues, erode the credibility of the government and casts doubt on its capability to deliver justice impartially. He stressed that these legal missteps are damaging the government’s reputation and place an unnecessary financial burden on the nation due to tribunal costs and unpaid salaries.
Emphasizing the significance of adhering to due process and natural justice, Usamate pointed out that the 2013 Constitution is the supreme law and should take precedence over any subordinate laws. He questioned how someone who swore an oath to uphold the Constitution might lack a clear understanding of its principles.
FijiLive reached out to the Minister for Justice for a response to these allegations.
This situation highlights the ongoing challenges in ensuring effective governance and the enforcement of the rule of law in Fiji. It serves as a reminder of the importance of legal competence within government roles to maintain public confidence and safeguard justice. As the political landscape evolves, it is crucial for leaders to navigate these complexities with clarity and integrity.
