Calls to Dismiss Fiji’s Minister: A Fight for Human Rights?

Opposition MP Ketan Lal is urging Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to swiftly remove Lynda Tabuya from her position as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection. Lal stated that the people of Fiji deserve a government that upholds human rights and social justice principles.

He emphasized the need for immediate action by the Prime Minister to dismiss Tabuya, asserting that Fiji requires a leadership that is compassionate, informed, and devoted to justice. Lal criticized Tabuya’s actions and statements, claiming they demonstrate her unfitness for her role.

Lal accused Tabuya of showing a troubling disregard for the core values of human rights and justice, which are essential for democracy. He pointed out that her support for the death penalty reflects a significant misunderstanding of effective crime prevention approaches and places Fiji at odds with international human rights standards. He stressed that this issue is not simply a policy disagreement but a serious violation of her responsibilities and ethical duties as a Minister.

“I must emphasize my grave concern over the Minister’s recent and alarming proposal to reinstate the death penalty for individuals involved in large-scale drug trafficking. Although I have previously denounced this dangerous and backward suggestion, it has become evident that more action is needed,” Lal stated.

FijiLive has reached out to Lynda Tabuya for her comments regarding this matter.
