Opposition MP and TISI Sangam Fiji president Praveen Bala has called for national support following the desecration of the Shiv Mandir in Samabula, Suva. During a parliamentary session on Monday, Mr. Bala expressed that the attack has inflicted profound emotional and spiritual distress within the Sanatan Dharam Hindu community.

“I echo the community’s condemnation and call for a meaningful, inclusive healing process,” he stated. Bala urged Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to allocate emergency funds via the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs or another suitable channel to aid in the restoration of the temple and replace the damaged sacred statues.

The Shiv Mandir is more than just a physical structure; it serves as a spiritual and historical landmark, having been the founding site of the Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji in 1958, with its origins tracing back to the 1920s. This temple has become a focal point for worship, cultural identity, and national unity.

In light of recent events, other leaders have echoed similar sentiments. Dhirendra Nand, President of the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, previously described the vandalism as not merely a physical attack but as one with deep spiritual ramifications for the community. He has called for increased police presence at religious sites to prevent future incidents and emphasized the community’s need for solidarity.

The swift response from police, resulting in the arrest of a suspect in connection to this incident, has been positively acknowledged by Bala. Additionally, community leaders have voiced hopes that these tragic events can catalyze a stronger dialogue among various faiths, ultimately reinforcing the rich multicultural tapestry of Fiji.

As Fiji grapples with these challenges, the collective response from community leaders showcases the strength and resilience of its people. There is a hopeful aspiration that through collective action and dialogue, Fiji can navigate toward a future marked by harmony and respect among its diverse faith communities.
