A close friend of the late Michael Cuvuka, whose body was discovered in the Navua River last week, is advocating for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his untimely death. The Fiji Police Force reported that Cuvuka died from drowning following a night spent at a resort.
Mary Benefield expressed her family’s heartbreak over the loss in a social media post, highlighting their quest for answers and justice. She stated, “Michael, your death has left us with unanswered questions, and as your family, we continue to seek truth and justice.” Benefield called for the Fiji Police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation concerning the hours between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. on December 22, 2024.
She raised concerns about the official ruling of drowning, which does not seem to coincide with accounts from those who were present with Cuvuka or with the evidence they have collected. “The story remains incomplete and inconclusive. As his family, we need closure, and we implore law enforcement to investigate this matter diligently,” she added.
Benefield also reached out to anyone who might have information about that night at the resort, urging them to come forward. “It is deeply painful to have to write this on a public platform, but our family cannot rest until we understand what truly happened,” she stated.
This call for clarity highlights the importance of thorough investigations in cases of unexplained deaths, to provide grieving families with the answers they deserve. Understanding the circumstances can also help prevent similar incidents in the future, fostering a safer community.
The commitment to justice and truth by Cuvuka’s family is a powerful reminder of the bonds of love and the quest for answers that many families experience during tragic times. Their hope for transparency and justice is a sentiment echoed by many in similar situations, underlining the universal need for closure in the face of loss.
