Opposition Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has urged Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to take decisive action against Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga, citing concerns over his legal interpretation skills. Usamate contends that Turaga’s mismanagement of legal matters is reflecting poorly on the Prime Minister and the government’s overall effectiveness.
In an interview with FijiLive, Usamate expressed that Turaga’s decisions have not only undermined Rabuka’s leadership but have also raised alarming doubts about the government’s fidelity to the principles of the rule of law. He specifically pointed out that the legal basis cited by Turaga does not provide him the authority to suspend Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, who has faced allegations of misconduct.
Usamate also highlighted a troubling inconsistency in the treatment of cases within the government, noting that while Dr. Nakarawa has been placed on leave, Barbara Malimali, who is under investigation for various allegations, including abuse of office, remains unaffected. This disparity, according to Usamate, undermines public confidence in the government’s justice system.
He emphasized that these legal missteps could tarnish the government’s reputation and incur unnecessary financial costs, straining national resources and wasting public funds, including expenses associated with tribunal hearings and outstanding salaries.
The former FijiFirst Minister stressed the importance of adhering to natural justice and due process, pointing to the 2013 Constitution as the supreme law that should guide all actions. He expressed disbelief that someone who has sworn to uphold this Constitution appears to misunderstand its fundamental tenets.
FijiLive has sought comments from the Minister for Justice regarding these allegations.
This situation presents a critical moment for the government as it grapples with maintaining its integrity and public trust. Resolving these legal discrepancies and ensuring fair treatment for all individuals could serve to strengthen the government’s position and reinforce the rule of law in Fiji. It’s a reminder that effective governance relies heavily on sound legal judgment and equitable practices.
