Calls for Justice After Desecration of Holy Ramayana Shocks Fiji

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has called for an immediate investigation by police following the desecration of the Holy Ramayana at the Vunicuicui Shiv Mandir in Labasa. This act has been labeled as sacrilege against the Hindu community and occurs at a poignant time when Hindus are engaged in nightly prayers celebrating the birth of Lord Rama.

Prof Prasad condemned the act vehemently, stating that such disrespect towards sacred texts is intolerable and a serious crime. He emphasized the emotional impact of this act, particularly as it coincides with the religious observances of the Hindu community. “The desecration of the Holy Ramayana or indeed any Holy scripture of all religions is clearly sacrilege and a serious crime. This is inexcusable, intolerable and unforgivable,” he remarked.

He acknowledged the restraint shown by temple devotees, who, instead of responding with anger, are praying for peace and wisdom for those responsible for the crime. Moreover, he noted the importance of unity in Fiji’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, indicating that acts of intolerance undermine the nation’s social fabric.

The call for action comes amidst a backdrop of similar incidents targeting places of worship across Fiji, which have heightened concerns about community harmony and respect for diverse faiths. Previous reports have documented other acts of sacrilege, including vandalism and theft at various temples, indicating a growing trend of disrespect towards religious sites.

Prof Prasad urged the community to remain vigilant and foster an environment of respect and understanding among different faiths. He reminded everyone that the shared values of truth, justice, and righteousness, as preached during the observing of Lord Rama’s birth, should guide the nation towards healing and unity.

In light of these troubling occurrences, there is hope that through increased dialogue and community engagement, fostering respect for places of worship will become a priority, contributing to a more harmonious society in Fiji.
