Calls for Inquiry: Is Democracy at Risk in Fiji?

The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged the Government to launch an Independent Inquiry into allegations made by former Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, regarding ministerial interference in the agency’s operations.

Seruiratu expressed that these concerns must be addressed urgently. He stated his agreement with the Prime Minister on the necessity of an investigation.

“To promote fairness, transparency, and good governance, I suggest that this Commission of Inquiry be established after the upcoming parliamentary session. The Commission should include Judicial Officers, Members of Parliament, and distinguished legal experts from the private sector, ensuring that none are currently under investigations. It is crucial for members to be impartial, without any conflicts of interest related to the matters at hand, and to adhere to the laws in place,” Seruiratu explained.

He emphasized that the allegations are serious and undermine the core principles of good governance and democracy. The Opposition Leader also called on the former Deputy Commissioner to clarify her allegations and insisted that those accused be afforded the opportunity to defend themselves.

“We stand at a pivotal moment for our beloved nation. As elected representatives of the people of Fiji, we must strive to uncover the truth behind these allegations and work diligently to restore the trust of our citizens,” Seruiratu concluded.
