Calls for Independent Inquiry into FICAC Allegations Spark Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that a Commission of Inquiry is the most suitable and unbiased way to address the allegations concerning the operations of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). In response to an interview with foreign media by former Acting Deputy FICAC Commissioner Francis Pulewai, Rabuka noted that an independent inquiry would be better equipped to tackle the issues highlighted, especially those related to purported ministerial interference in FICAC investigations.

“If such an inquiry finds that undue interference did occur, the due process recommended by the Commission of Inquiry will need to be followed,” Rabuka said. He also emphasized that there have been no modifications to the laws governing FICAC and affirmed that the Government will continue to uphold the law.

Regarding the claims of threats made against Pulewai, the Prime Minister condemned any such actions, confirming that he has not been informed of any such threats nor have they been reported to him or the Fiji Police.
