Calls for Independent Inquiry Amid Allegations of Ministerial Interference

The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged the Government to launch an Independent Inquiry following allegations made by former Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, regarding ministerial interference in the agency’s operations.

In a statement, Seruiratu expressed that the allegations are troubling and require immediate attention. He concurred with the Prime Minister on the necessity of an investigation, suggesting that a Commission of Inquiry be formed after the upcoming parliamentary sitting. This Commission, he proposed, could consist of Judicial Officers, Members of Parliament, and esteemed legal professionals from the private sector, ensuring they are not involved in any ongoing investigations and remain impartial, without conflicts of interest concerning the issues at hand.

Seruiratu emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, stating that they undermine the core principles of good governance and democracy. He also called on the former Deputy Commissioner to provide further clarification on her claims and insisted that those named in the allegations be afforded the opportunity to defend themselves.

“We stand at a critical juncture for our cherished nation, and as elected representatives of the Fijian people, it is our responsibility to thoroughly investigate these claims and work diligently to restore public trust,” Seruiratu stated.
