Calls for Fiji’s Constitution Review: A Divided Nation?

Opposition Member of Parliament Viliame Naupoto has asserted that the 2013 Constitution fails to create a unifying effect among the people of Fiji. Speaking during his end-of-week address in Parliament, Naupoto highlighted that this issue stems from the process used to draft the Constitution.

He noted that there exists a significant divide, primarily along political lines, regarding support for the Constitution. This divide is fueled by the perception that the Constitution is closely associated with a particular political party.

Since the inaugural election under this Constitution in 2014, it has faced ongoing criticism both inside and outside Parliament, with many voices advocating for a review of its provisions.

Naupoto emphasized the necessity of amending the Constitution and urged fellow MPs to consider the importance of engaging the public in the review process. He clarified that amending the Constitution is not an attack on any individual or political party, but rather a step towards benefiting the people, promoting nation-building, and enhancing democracy.
