The Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu has urged Barbara Malimali, the head of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), to resign or suspend her duties while an investigation is underway regarding serious allegations against her.

Seruiratu expressed his deep concern about the investigation, which stems from a complaint lodged by Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa with Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew. The allegations include abuse of office, witness intimidation, and harassment, all of which raise significant ethical concerns.

To promote transparency and restore public trust in governance, Seruiratu emphasized the necessity of upholding accountability and integrity in public roles. He questioned how Malimali, as the nation’s leading anti-corruption official, can continue in her position amidst such serious accusations.

Moreover, he believes that it is now up to the Judicial Services Commission, which appointed Malimali, to take appropriate action to mitigate the damage done to the reputations of both FICAC and the commission itself.

This situation highlights the importance of ethical leadership and accountability in public service. By advocating for integrity at the highest level, there is hope that this incident can reinforce the need for transparency and trust in Fiji’s institutions.

In summary, the opposition leader calls for action to address allegations against FICAC’s head, stressing the importance of integrity and public confidence in governance.
