Calls for Constitutional Change: Is Fiji Divided?

Opposition Member of Parliament Viliame Naupoto has expressed concerns over the lack of unity among the people of Fiji, attributing this issue to the 2013 Constitution. During his statement in Parliament, he highlighted that the formation process of the Constitution has led to significant division, particularly along political lines.

Naupoto stated that many people view the Constitution as being closely associated with a single political party, which has resulted in polarized opinions since its implementation in the 2014 elections. He noted that the Constitution has faced ongoing criticism, both within and outside Parliament, with calls from various individuals and organizations advocating for its review.

He emphasized the necessity for amendments, urging fellow MPs to recognize the importance of taking the Constitution back to the people for evaluation and necessary changes. Naupoto clarified that the push for review and amendment is not against any individual or political party but is aimed at benefiting the people, fostering national development, and strengthening democracy. He believes that these actions are essential for enhancing Fiji’s young democratic framework.
