Opposition MP Virendra Lal is urging the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations to enhance safety regulations for amusement rides to prevent accidents and ensure public safety. This call to action follows a recent incident involving a Ferris wheel at the Wairiki Sevens, which has prompted concerns over ride safety standards.
Lal is advocating for immediate measures to prohibit unsafe rides until they can be thoroughly inspected and verified for safety. He emphasizes that the government must prioritize the well-being of its citizens by enforcing strict safety protocols to regularly check and maintain amusement rides.
He remarked, “The safety of our people remains a priority that cannot be joked with; we do not want further tragic accidents.” This sentiment resonates in light of previous incidents, such as the tragic event at the Fiji Showcase in 2023 where a young woman lost her life, indicating a significant lapse in current safety procedures.
As the Shadow Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lal expressed deep concern regarding the oversight by the Occupational Health and Safety department, stating that existing safety measures are insufficient and that many rides are outdated. He highlighted a previous incident on August 1st, where a child’s life was endangered due to a malfunctioning ride, emphasizing that such oversights should trigger urgent reforms.
Fortunately, the recent Ferris wheel incident did not result in any fatalities, which Lal views as a potential wake-up call for authorities to take decisive action. The overarching message is clear: the safety of children, as well as all riders, should never be compromised.
In summary, Lal’s calls for reform could lead to a more robust safety framework, which not only protects citizens but also restores public confidence in amusement parks. There is hope that this tragic reminder will prompt the necessary changes, ensuring that safety becomes an unwavering priority moving forward. Stronger regulations could spark a culture of safety and responsibility within the entertainment industry, ultimately enhancing enjoyment for everyone.
