Opposition MP Virendra Lal has urged the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations to enhance the legislation governing amusement rides, emphasizing the need for safety to prevent accidents and potential fatalities. This call for action follows a recent Ferris wheel incident at the Wairiki Sevens.
Lal believes it is crucial for authorities to take decisive measures, including banning unsafe rides. He insists that prioritizing public safety requires stringent enforcement of comprehensive safety standards, ensuring that all amusement rides undergo regular inspections and maintenance.
“The safety of our people remains a priority that cannot be taken lightly; we must prevent further tragic incidents,” Lal stated. He urged the government to act responsibly by shutting down any rides that cannot guarantee safety.
He pointed out that the recent incident serves as a glaring reminder of the risks associated with outdated and poorly maintained rides. Although this particular event thankfully did not lead to any loss of life, it follows a tragic accident at the Fiji Showcase in 2023 where a young woman lost her life, illustrating a significant oversight in safety protocols.
As the Shadow Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lal expressed deep concern over the lack of adequate oversight from the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) department. He highlighted an alarming incident on August 1st where a malfunctioning ride posed a serious risk to a child’s safety, calling for immediate reforms in safety measures.
Lal concluded by underscoring the inadequacy of current safety measures and the age of many rides in operation, stressing that the recent mishap should serve as a wake-up call.
In light of these concerns, it is a timely opportunity for authorities to reevaluate and strengthen safety regulations for amusement rides, prioritizing the welfare of the community and ensuring that all enjoy safe recreational activities. The proactive stance taken by the MP not only potentially paves the way for improved safety standards but also reflects a commitment to protecting the lives of vulnerable populations, particularly children.
