Veteran boxing trainer John Ramos has urged the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, to direct the investigation into the tragic death of boxer Ubayd Haider towards the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF). Ramos raised critical questions regarding why the BCF allowed the boxing event scheduled for October 26 to proceed without an ambulance on-site and without conducting necessary drug tests.
He stated, “The Minister should look into why the boxing permit was given the green light when the promoter did not have an ambulance on site plus the drug test. Why was the programme not stopped when these BCF requirements were not met? This should be investigated.” Ramos emphasized the need for a thorough review of the actions taken by BCF directors.
Sydney-based trainer Lepani Wilson echoed Ramos’s sentiments, emphasizing that BCF should take responsibility for the oversight rather than playing the blame game. He described how, during his tenure as president of the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association of Fiji (PBWA), he ensured every event met safety checklists with promoters before proceeding.
In response, BCF chairman Adi Narayan explained that the title fight was sanctioned by the International Boxing Organization (IBO) and that BCF’s role was primarily to approve the event. He mentioned that he had confirmed with the promoter on the day of the fight that all arrangements were in place. However, he acknowledged the pressure of his responsibilities as a chairman, stating, “People think I just sat there and look at the fight; the stress I go through – these are things people don’t know.”
This unfortunate incident has sparked a continued dialogue about the safety measures within boxing events and the accountability of organizing bodies. It presents an opportunity for reforms to enhance the safety protocols in place to protect athletes during competitions. As investigations unfold, there is hope that positive changes will emerge from this situation, ensuring that the welfare of boxers is prioritized in future events.
