Shairana Ali, the CEO of Save the Children Fiji, has stressed the urgent need for enhanced protective measures, improved education for parents and caregivers, and greater support for children facing abuse or existing in vulnerable situations. Speaking on the occasion of the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Day, she pointed to alarming statistics from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which reported over 200 cases of child sexual abuse and more than 300 instances of physical abuse or neglect in the year 2023 alone.
Ali emphasized that these figures represent real children with individual stories and suffering, underscoring the importance of not remaining passive during this crisis. She highlighted the organization’s commitment to providing support to families, raising community awareness, and advocating for stronger child protection laws.
Moreover, she called for a collective effort to combat child abuse, stressing that involvement from government agencies, law enforcement, non-government organizations, educators, community leaders, and families is essential. Ali pointed out that child abuse often goes unreported due to fear, shame, and a normalized perception of violence, making education about the signs of abuse and protection vital.
This article serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing efforts and the communal responsibility needed to protect children. With increasing awareness and concerted action, there is hope for change, fostering environments where children can thrive free from harm and full of optimism for their futures. Together, communities can build a stronger foundation for child safety and well-being.
