The BBC has revealed exciting developments for its popular series “Call the Midwife.” Plans are underway for both a feature film and a prequel television series, which will delve into the lives of midwives during the Second World War.

The announcement coincides with the commencement of filming for the show’s 15th series, which chronicles the experiences of midwives in London’s East End from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. The film, set in 1972, will take the beloved characters to an undisclosed international location, offering viewers a chance to engage with them in a new and unfamiliar setting.

The prequel series aims to provide a closer look at life in Poplar during the Blitz, a period characterized by both hardship and resilience. Heidi Thomas, the showrunner, emphasized her desire to explore stories beyond the existing timeline of 1957 to 1971, stating that “the Blitz years in the East End were extraordinary – filled with loss, togetherness, courage and joy.” This new narrative direction will feature younger versions of some familiar characters, allowing audiences to connect with the past in a fresh way.

Both projects are being developed by Thomas alongside executive producers Dame Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank, who are also working on the upcoming 16th series. Thomas aims to bring poignant stories to life, targeting a new generation of viewers who have developed a fondness for the series and its themes of community, compassion, and the challenges faced by midwives.

In the immediate future, fans can look forward to a two-part Christmas special in the upcoming 15th series, which will feature characters traveling to Hong Kong on a humanitarian mission.

These creative endeavors illustrate the show’s enduring appeal and its ability to evolve. As it expands its universe, “Call the Midwife” continues to resonate with audiences, reminding us of the power of storytelling and the importance of community ties even in times of great difficulty. With these new projects on the horizon, the series’ legacy is poised for a positive and inspiring future.
