The National Farmers Union (NFU) is demanding a thorough investigation into The Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) regarding its adherence to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practices. This call for scrutiny follows an incident at the Lautoka Mill where a worker sustained injuries after becoming trapped in a conveyor belt. According to NFU General Secretary Mahendra Chaudhry, the worker was stuck for 45 minutes before being freed, allegedly with no assistance from FSC in calling for medical help. Instead, Chaudhry claims the injured worker was transported to the hospital uncomfortably in a vehicle after his release.

Chaudhry expressed deep concern for the safety of workers at FSC mills, highlighting that accidents, including fatalities, have been a recurring issue. He emphasized the need for urgent attention to the safety standards at these facilities, as employees have often voiced worries about inadequate OHS inspections. The FSC has acknowledged the incident and announced that operations at the Lautoka Mill would be suspended for 36 hours for repairs.

This incident echoes previous concerns regarding operational issues at FSC, including a series of mechanical failures and safety protocol shortcomings. Similar past reports indicate that such operational disturbances have historically led to disruptions in sugar production and have raised alarms among stakeholders about the mill’s overall safety and efficiency. The recent event merits scrutiny not only for immediate remedial action but also for fostering long-term improvements in safety practices.

In light of ongoing discussions about workplace safety, there’s a hopeful outlook that this incident will lead to enhanced regulatory focus and better compliance with safety standards, which could ultimately benefit both workers and the wider community that depends on the sugar industry in Fiji. As investigations proceed, the emphasis on safety improvements could pave the way for sustainable operational practices.
