The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has called for the resignation or suspension of Barbara Malimali, the head of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), pending the outcome of an investigation into serious allegations against her.

In an official statement, Seruiratu expressed his deep concern regarding the ongoing inquiry into Malimali’s conduct, which he described as involving significant accusations of office abuse, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses. These claims were reportedly initiated last month by the Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, who filed a complaint with Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew.

Given the gravity of the situation, Seruiratu argues that Malimali’s resignation or suspension is necessary to maintain transparency and restore public confidence in institutions tasked with upholding integrity. He stressed the need for upholding the highest standards of accountability, particularly in roles related to public interest.

He questioned how Malimali, as the chief anti-corruption officer in Fiji, could continue to serve in her capacity while facing such detrimental allegations. Seruiratu emphasized that this matter transcends individual accountability and calls upon the Judicial Services Commission, responsible for appointing the FICAC Commissioner, to act decisively to preserve the integrity and reputation of both FICAC and itself.

This situation emphasizes the importance of transparency and integrity in public office, which are crucial for fostering public trust. If managed appropriately, this investigation and the subsequent actions could lead to significant reforms in how corruption is addressed in Fiji, potentially reinforcing the standards expected from public officials.

In a hopeful outlook, this challenge may present an opportunity for systemic improvements within FICAC, ensuring that such allegations are thoroughly investigated and resolved in a manner that strengthens the institution’s credibility.
