The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has called for Barbara Malimali, the head of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), to either resign or step down temporarily as an investigation into serious allegations against her unfolds. This call follows a complaint lodged last month by Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, to Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, which details allegations including office abuse, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses by Malimali.
Seruiratu expressed profound concern regarding these allegations, emphasizing the importance of ensuring transparency and public confidence in institutions tasked with upholding integrity. He argued that maintaining high standards of accountability is crucial, especially related to public interests. The opposition leader questioned how Malimali can fulfill her role as the chief anti-corruption official when facing such serious accusations. He highlighted that it is now up to the Judicial Services Commission, responsible for appointing FICAC’s Commissioner, to take necessary action to restore the integrity of both FICAC and the Commission itself.
This situation underlines the need for strict adherence to accountability and the rule of law in Fiji’s governance. Transparency in such investigations can strengthen public trust in institutions designed to combat corruption, potentially paving the way for improved operations within FICAC and restoring confidence in its mission.
In such trying times, it is essential that the proper channels work efficiently to resolve these allegations, ensuring that justice is served. It may ultimately serve as an opportunity for reform and greater vigilance against corruption in Fiji’s leadership.
