Patrick Bower, president of the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Association, has called for primary schools across the country to appoint dedicated physical education (PE) teachers. He pointed out that only a limited number of primary schools, such as International School Suva, currently employ PE teachers, which he believes is essential for the comprehensive development of students.

During the first day of the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, Bower noted the remarkable talent of student athletes from various regions, yet he expressed concern that physical education is being inadequately prioritized in both primary and secondary education. He emphasized that physical education encompasses more than just popular sports like rugby, soccer, and netball—it represents a well-rounded program crucial for the holistic development of children.

Bower acknowledged that while the Day One activities experienced some delays, primarily due to late entries from district teams, the resilience of officials and teachers was commendable. He remarked on the importance of consistency within teams, suggesting that once a team is selected, athletes should adhere to their commitments rather than shifting to other sports.

Although there were minor challenges, including some logistical issues due to rainfall, Bower praised the performances of the young athletes and the efforts of their coaches. The event marked a positive return of school sports competitions after the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic over the past few years. The competition will conclude shortly, reflecting a growing enthusiasm for sports among primary school students.

This renewed focus on physical education could lead to improved fitness and teamwork skills, benefiting students not only in sports but also in their overall personal development. As schools potentially explore the inclusion of PE teachers, there is hope for a more inclusive and holistic approach to educating the younger generation.
