Savenaca Narube, leader of the Unity Fiji Party, has called for the resignation of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka following the government’s failure to secure the necessary majority in Parliament to amend the 2013 Constitution. Narube described the outcome of the vote as a considerable embarrassment for Rabuka, who he believes should take full responsibility for this oversight. He highlighted the importance of political leaders accurately assessing support before making major legislative amendments.
Narube criticized Rabuka for not adequately preparing for the vote on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025, arguing that passing off the blame does not resolve the underlying issues. He suggested that instead of pursuing amendments through Parliament, the proper approach would be to challenge the legal validity of the controversial 2013 Constitution in court.
The recent setback has invigorated Unity Fiji and its allies, who are now focused on initiating legal proceedings regarding the constitution’s legitimacy. Narube pointed out the current government’s lack of credible leadership and called on the Prime Minister to resign, asserting that Rabuka’s position is now untenable due to repeated failures during his administration.
This situation underscores Narube’s earlier calls for political integrity and accountability, particularly as Fiji heads toward the 2026 elections. He urged voters to select leaders dedicated to true public service, economic progress, and unity among Fiji’s diverse communities.
Despite the political turbulence, there is hope that increased public engagement and demand for accountability may lead to improved governance. This period offers an opportunity for citizens to become more active participants in their democracy, potentially fostering a more transparent and responsible leadership that would pave the way for a brighter future for Fiji.
