Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, has called for an urgent independent inquiry into the untimely death of Ubayd Haider, previously known as Nathan Singh, along with the operations of the Boxing Commission. He emphasized that while boxing is inherently a dangerous sport, it is crucial that stringent measures are in place to safeguard athletes.

Seruiratu highlighted that Haider was left in a coma when the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) initiated an investigation, but he insisted that this effort alone is insufficient. He advocates for a thorough independent inquiry, aimed at not only examining the events leading to Haider’s passing but also reviewing the protocols and safety measures implemented by the BCF.

The leader expressed serious concerns regarding reports of epinephrine and needles found in the warm-up area, which he believes warrant immediate and comprehensive investigation. He conveyed that the Commission has a responsibility to Ubayd, his family, and the wider sporting community to ensure that all safety protocols were adhered to in the lead-up to this tragedy.

Seruiratu stressed the need for transparency and accountability, noting that an independent inquiry is essential for shedding light on this incident and ensuring that such a tragedy does not recur in the future.

Overall, this call for inquiry signifies a commitment to athlete safety in sports, which could lead to better regulations and practices safeguarding participants in the boxing arena. It is a hopeful step toward preventing similar incidents and enhancing the overall safety standards in sports.
